How does the AI follow-up question assistant work?

Start a listening session on your Mac. Audio becomes text locally. When you request a question, the app uses conversation context to suggest one follow-up, with a brief reason. Choose a breadth—just said, this topic or whole conversation—or let the app choose. You decide whether to ask it, adapt it or move on.

Can I use it for qualitative research interviews?

Qualitative interviewing is the design centre. The app is designed to help you explore a concrete example, an unexplained change or a tradeoff in what someone said. It can also support customer interviews, client workshops, coaching sessions and team discussions. The person asking still judges whether the question fits.

Does it ask questions automatically or speak for me?

No. You request each suggestion. One Better Question shows one question and a short explanation; it never takes a turn in the conversation or sends a reply for you. You stay in control of what you say and when.

Does it record meetings or save transcripts?

The app processes audio to transcribe speech on your Mac, but does not save audio recordings, transcripts, questions or conversation history to disk. Conversation text stays in memory during the session and is cleared when it ends. It does not create meeting notes or automatic summaries. Copying a question to your clipboard is your choice.

Is my conversation private? What leaves my Mac?

In Private mode, conversation content stays on your Mac. In Hosted mode, text goes through the app’s service to Anthropic only when you request a question. An ordinary press sends recent context and a bounded running thread; choosing a breadth sends the conversation so far. Long requests may use the newest portion that fits, with a notice.

Audio is never sent, and nothing is sent between requests. Hosted providers’ data-handling terms still apply. Read the privacy policy and get the permission of the people involved.

Which Macs can run One Better Question?

The private beta requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 26 or later. It is a native Mac app. The current beta is not available for Windows, iPhone, Android or as a browser app. See support and system requirements.
